Bad news in Texas. After 5 days on life support, newborn baby Olivia Marie died. “We heard a pop like cracking,” is what her parents told reporters. After a healthy pregnancy, soon-to-be parents Rachel Melancon and Allen Coats traveled to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas. During the birth, Rachel Melancon pleaded to doctors for a C-section, but they insisted on using forceps to guide little Olivia out. Hit the jump for more details.

Rachel Melancon’s mother-in-law, Angie Coats, was able to talk to reporters, she stated,

“It was 18 hours until the delivery. [Rachel] was running a 103 fever … Five hours passed, then [the obstetrician] came in and she started to push. But she was so worn out and the baby wasn’t even in the birth canal. [Rachel] claimed the baby was facing the wrong way and Dr Backardjiev tried to turn her with his hands. When he couldn’t do that, he took the small forceps to try to pull the baby out. He kept going and even put his foot up on the bed trying to pull.”

Immediately after, she was rushed off for an emergency C-section, but once the baby was delivered, she was unable to breathe. The “pop like cracking” that was heard, were the forceps fracturing the baby’s skull and spine rendering poor Olivia brain-damaged.

“I felt her pulled out of me and the room was silent. No crying baby and they told Allen to leave the room. That’s the last I remember before waking up to my baby girl lifeless.”

After this avoidable fiasco, the family decided to sue the Texas Hospital where Olivia was born.
