What was once thought of as a potential game changer, turns out to be more of a restart button. Back in March of 2013, a Mississippi baby born with the virus that causes AIDS was given high doses of three antiretroviral drugs within 30 hours of her birth. Doctors knew the mother was HIV positive and administered the drugs in hopes of controlling the virus, according to CNN. Well, it looks like the third time is NOT the charm. After being taken off of the drugs during her third year of life, the virus returned. More info after the jump.

“Certainly, this is a disappointing turn of events for this young child, the medical staff involved in the child’s care, and the HIV/AIDS research community,” NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci said in a statement. “Scientifically, this development reminds us that we still have much more to learn about the intricacies of HIV infection and where the virus hides in the body.”
