Tyler The Creator on Pharrell & Illmatic

Another side to the game: Tyler the Creator Talks Cherry Bomb, Pharrell, Illmatic and Black Skaters while reflecting on his idols coming together to perform, his come-up as a black kid called ‘Oreo’ and the progression of his music as the upcoming album just dropped two tracks!

He might not be everybody’s cup of tea but the same can be said for basically any artist out there…Tyler the Creator Talks Cherry Bomb, Pharrell, Illmatic and Black Skaters as the soon dropping “Cherry Bomb” album will carve another notch on his music catalog. Music heads have already peeped the evolution of the sounds–edging closer and closer to early N.E.R.D. and the “In Search of…” album by Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams. Fitting, as the two surprisingly came together for a rare appearance to fulfill the request/dream of Tyler seeing them perform together at least one last time–at Tyler’s Camp Flog Gnaw show last November–bringing him to tears. N.E.R.D. is among Tyler’s biggest influences, according to Complex besides Eminem (who he’s blasted in the past) and Dave Chappelle.

Now if you’re a “Hip Hop purist,” prepare to “clutch your pearls” or in this case your gold ropes: Tyler the Creator Talks Cherry Bomb, Pharrell, Illmatic and Black Skaters and says when it comes to that epic first album by Nasir Jones that “‘In Search Of…’ actually did more for me than Illmatic.'”—-welp!!!…Scoff as you might it’s honest not to mention accurate when you hear him out further:

“I was a black skater kid. I liked f*cking Good Charlotte and Kenny G, and I was black. And I went to school with a bunch of black kids so they kind of stayed away from me. I would always be called ‘white boy’ when I was f*cking younger, it just aggravated me. You don’t have to be a certain color to stand on some wood with wheels on the bottom.” (via Spin)

“I got called ‘Oreo’ as a kid because I was black, but I hung with white boys and skated. I had black friends, and I noticed they were into the same things but a lot of them still chose a lane. You can’t fault me because my friends were teaching me what an ollie was and I was dropping in on a mini half-pipe, listening to Suicidal Tendencies and Dead Kennedys.” (via Complex)

…that’s #realtalk though! Tyler the Creator Talks Cherry Bomb which dropped the new singles “Deathcamp” and “F*cking Young/Perfect,” said to be evolutions of N.E.R.D.’s “Rock Star” and “Provider.” Tyler also recently announced his latest international tour on top of his plans to own his own tech platform which are definite #wins. Do you appreciate the diversity of the culture or do you “stay in a lane” and raise an eyebrow to this??? If the pressure’s getting too much you might want to try some words of wisdom in “turning your life around” like Tyler says…
