“I always think about Mase’s toughness,” said Derek Harper, point guard on coach Pat Riley’s New York Knicks of the ‘90s. “He, along with (Charles Oakley), set the tone for our defense and our overall approach to the game.”

Mason, 48, teamed with Oakley and Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing to forge an imposing front line. A saddened Ewing fondly recalled their five seasons as teammates.

“Mase came to play every night, and was always ready to go to battle with me every time we stepped on the court together,” said Ewing. “I will remember him for his strength, determination and perseverance.”

Super fan Spike Lee expressed his condolences, as well as NBA commissioner Adam Silver and many others such as an emotional message from his son, Anthony Jr, which you can see their tweets in the gallery. The NBA lost a really good guy today, on and off the court. We Love You Mase!
