It has been a long time since Daniel “Booby” Gibson made you think of his NBA career. In more recent years he is known to the public more as Keyshia Cole’s then boyfriend than anything else. Booby is now focused 100% on a career in the rap game and he talked about the decision process that led him to that.

Going from basketball player to rapper is such a cliche move but it’s his life. Truth is, when it came to basketball, he stopped being relevant a while ago. That’s not a diss towards him, its just a fact. There is a reason he hasn’t been on an NBA roster in years and it’s because he just couldn’t hack it anymore with the best players in the world, although he will tell you otherwise.

On His Decision to Walk Away From B-Ball and Pursue Music

The beauty is people need to understand, I do have the option of playing in the league. But you get to a certain point where you have to understand what it is you want. And, I went through some serious injuries. Like, towards the end of my career, the last two years. When I tore that tendon in my foot, every time I got out there, I felt like I couldn’t play at the level I wanted to. And that’s painful, to know your potential, and every time you get out there, you can’t maximize on that potential. And so, the more and more I would get out there and try to play through the pain, you kind of have to realize that there’s more to me that just basketball. And I was going to take it as far as I could take it, and I felt like I did. I felt like I got everything out the NBA that I could and I was blessed with more. And that’s why I’m here: the ability to do more and show more.

One thing I will give Booby, even though I disagree with his view that he could still be in the NBA, is the fact he seems very passionate about making music. Many times athletes think because they have money they can just try other things and will be good at it. We have all seen how many ball players try to rap and completely suck.

If you want to see the entire interview, head on over to Revolt. He talks more about his relationship with Keyshia Cole and how his music will sound.
