This is incredible, the 1st time the Notorious BIG touched down on Hot 97, AND if you don’t know, there was really NO other radio station(Major) in the country playing Hip Hop full time, so this is more than likely the 1st radio(To Clarify for the slow, 1st Major radio) interview Big ever did!!!
Back in Late to mid June 1994, about a week or 2 before July 4th(either June 17th or 24th), this interview happened on Flex “Friday Night Street Jam”, and Like WOW, there are so many NYC hip hop and Biggie Smalls & 90’s era jewels in this interview, like the fact Flex mentions Biggie had an ‘underground buzz'(Early), this interview was before “Juicy” dropped and “Unbelievable” was the confirmed B-side, and that his name on the Album was official the NOTORIOUS BIG because some skate hip hop punk poser sued him for the name ‘Biggie Smalls’ prior to this(except he spelled his with a z), CRAZY!!!
Also what about the ‘beeper’ going off during the interview, man listen, times have changed so much since then. We do have to point out that although Big droop Unbelievable and Juicy as a freestyles, but to be fair, NO one had heard them yet, and those songs are FIRE no matter what so….
Not to mention Craig Mack came in on some last minute but killed it, AND he was that dude at the time, Flavor in your Ear was ringing!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this, brought me back to the days my boys would bring mix tapes from New York to New Mexico! And hearing Biggie, well I’m a woman but it brought tears to my eyes.
Tat Wza…are u out of your mind? The first paragraph is very misleading…yes it is true that at the time Hot 97 had become the dominate force in playing hip hop for the masses within the tri-state, however by the time he got there, he had already been on several local college radio stations perfecting his craft as well as VMB(video music box) and the few shows that were on public access television…please do not give a revisionist history of the era…what will be next you gonna say that the Big L-Jay-Z freestyle was originally aired on the Stretch Armstrong show when he was DJing at Hot 97…
lol, I never said Big hadn’t done interviews, I said radio(meaning not TV), and yes he had done college, forgive me for automatically thinking a little bigger as I went from college radio to Major’s a few years later and remember how important it was that Hot came on full time on a major FM dial. I guess you don’t feel like it’s incredible to hear Big’s 1st Hot 97 interview, I see where you at…
